AIM FAQs
Please review all of the information below and the GSAS Application page before starting an application via the GSAS Application Portal.
Important Note: Our PhD program is not associated with the academic AI in Medicine program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
The AIM program aims to train students who have majored in a quantitative field to solve problems in biomedicine and clinical care. There isn't a fixed set of requirements for preparation. However, as the program is computationally and quantitatively rigorous, successful applicants will show mastery of fields such as statistics, linear algebra, computer science and machine learning. Although not necessary, foundational knowledge of biology or medicine will be beneficial.
Demonstrated research experience is essential.
Do you accept applications from international candidates?
Yes.
Is a Master’s degree required for eligibility?
A Master’s degree is not required. Individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing, are eligible to apply.
What is the recommended background/training for the AIM program?

Though not necessary, foundational biological or medical knowledge will be a benefit. Demonstrated research experience is essential.
I’m interested in the AIM program, but I have no computer science skills or background in AI/ML. Is this program for me?
Unfortunately, no. This program is meant for those with demonstrated skills and research experience in AI/ML who are passionate about using them to advance healthcare and medicine.
Can I speak to someone about my eligibility or chances of getting into the program?
No. We cannot speak to any individual's specific eligibility or admissions chances. An Admission Committee makes admissions decisions based on a holistic review of each candidate.
Is this program fully funded?
Yes. Accepted students are funded for five years while making satisfactory progress. However, students who want to apply for outside scholarships/fellowships are encouraged to do so.
Is there a part-time option? Can this program be done remotely?
No. The BMI PhD is an in-person, full-time program. It cannot be done remotely or part-time. A new cohort starts every September. Spring matriculation is not available.
What is the English Proficiency requirement for the BMI program?
Please review the GSAS English Proficiency Requirement! Note that BMI’s minimum scores are 100 for the TOEFL and 7 for the IELTS. In addition, candidates will need to demonstrate a minimum speaking subsection test score of 23 (old scale)/4.5 (new scale) for TOEFL or a minimum speaking subsection test score of 6.5 for IELTS. Applicants who took tests more than two years ago (i.e., before January 5, 2025, for Fall 2027 admission) must retake them. A master’s degree or other graduate degree is not accepted as proof of English proficiency. Official score reports must be sent to Harvard Griffin GSAS by the application deadline. Demonstration of English proficiency is a requirement of the application. Any additional questions about the English Proficiency Requirement should be sent to admiss@fas.harvard.edu.
Where can I find the AIM PhD application?
The application to all GSAS Harvard PhD programs is through the GSAS Applicant Portal. To apply to the AIM PhD track within BMI, simply start an application, select "Biomedical Informatics" as your Degree Program and, "AI in Medicine" as your Area of Interest in the BMI application.
Note that you may only submit a total of three applications to Harvard Griffin GSAS during your academic career. You can find more information here.
Can I apply to both BMI PhD tracks, BIG and AIM, at the same time?
No. You may only apply to BIG or AIM during the same application cycle. If you are interested in both tracks, please read about each program carefully and decide on one. As a reminder, you may submit up to three applications to GSAS during your academic career.
How do I request an application fee waiver?
Applicants can determine eligibility for a fee waiver by completing a series of questions in the Application Fee section of the application. Once these questions have been answered, the application system will provide an immediate response regarding the fee waiver eligibility.
Do I need to know which lab I’ll join in advance? Should I contact AIM faculty in advance?
No, you don’t need to know which lab you will join for your thesis work in advance. AIM students complete laboratory rotations during their first year to help them decide which lab to join. Contacting AIM faculty before applying is not recommended.
