I was born in Portugal and then moved to the state of Georgia when I was 7 years old, where I stayed for my undergraduate degree. During my time in undergrad, I had research experiences related to statistical and population genetics, as well as diabetes and its genetics with Dr. Chirag Patel here in the department as part of the summer SIBMI program. My current research interests stem from those experiences, as I'm interested in the intersection of environment and genetics in trait and disease etiology. Furthermore, I'm interested in identifying latent traits in the human phenotype and exploring how they might be informative of health outcomes. I chose the BIG program because I believe it'll suit me best for exploring these problems, so I am looking forward to being in such an environment.
